Am I Too Old for Dental Implants
Dallas, TX

Smiling patient sitting in dental chairWhen patients reach the age of 55, they are considered to be part of the senior demographic. From this age, patients considering dental implants may question their candidacy, the success rate of treatment, and the function of their implants. Despite what some may think, dental implants are an ideal dental treatment option for adults at any age. In our dental clinic, patients cannot age out of candidacy for dental implants.

Am I An Ideal Candidate For Implant Installation?

This is a common dental implant question. We do not consider any candidates as "too old" for dental implant placement, but aging can present restrictions for some patients. When considering who is a candidate for dental implants, our dentists will check your oral health, overall health, and the mass and density of the jawbone. You may not be an ideal candidate for dental implants if you have periodontal disease or severe gum recession.

Dental Implants Replace All Teeth

For some senior patients, tooth loss can be a natural occurrence. In other cases, this can occur due to bruxism, tooth decay, facial trauma, or severe gum disease. If you have lost multiple or all of your teeth, our dentists offer various implant-related treatment options that can provide permanent solutions. Patients missing all of their teeth on one or both jaws may qualify for full arch implants. These implants use a fixed bridge to replace a whole row of teeth. If more than two teeth in succession are missing, we offer an implant-supported bridge to replace these.

Dental Implants Vs. Bridges For Seniors

Dental implants and bridges are both viable alternatives for teeth replacement. Bridges are artificial teeth that replace multiple neighboring teeth. These teeth can be made with plastic and porcelain, and they are not secured on implants. Implants are considered a superior solution, as they are mounted on the jawbone and engineered with titanium. Dental implants can last a lifetime, while bridges will need to be replaced after 5-7 years.

What Are The Benefits Of Dental Implants For Seniors?

Dental implants are designed to appear virtually identical to natural teeth. Restoring missing teeth with dental implants can restore your own confidence in your smile. They also require minimal maintenance, only needing to be brushed and flossed like natural teeth.

Functionally, these implants are stable enough when fully healed to allow you to chew and eat a wide range of food. Dental implants make more ideal nutritious meals accessible for older patients.

Missing teeth can affect the jawbone, as the lack of stimuli from the missing tooth root can result in the jawbone deteriorating and atrophying. Dental implants address this issue by functioning like the roots of a tooth. When force is placed on the dental implant, the bone underneath is stimulated. This can eliminate the concern of gum recession and facial asymmetry completely.

If you are experiencing partial or total tooth loss, dental implants can be an ideal solution. At Dallas Oral Surgery Associates, we perform implant placements for patients of all ages.
