Tooth Extraction for Pain Management

Close up of hand removing single tooth from a model of a set of teeth and gumsAlthough our surgeons would prefer to restore and maintain natural teeth when possible, we always advise extracting an unhealthy or damaged tooth when it is causing you pain. At Dallas Oral Surgery Associates, we work with all patients through every step of tooth extraction, walking you through treatment from consultation to recovery. Our team aims to provide you with superior post-operative care so you can return to eating, talking, and smiling as effortlessly as before.

Why Teeth Need To Be Extracted

One of the most common tooth extractions performed in our office is wisdom teeth extractions. The eruption and impacting of wisdom teeth can cause discomfort, damage, and decay, requiring them to be removed. We also extract teeth that are suffering from advanced decay, disease, or other forms of damage. If a tooth has decayed enough, it can potentially cause infection and severe pain. When extracted, these teeth can be replaced by a dental implant to replicate the form and function of a natural tooth. Placing a dental implant will also ensure the health of the jawbone and neighboring teeth.

In some cases, tooth extraction may also be performed for patients receiving dentures in order to guarantee a proper fit and tight seal between the gums.

What You Can Expect During A Tooth Extraction

The tooth extraction procedure will vary depending on the location and nature of the tooth being removed. Procedures that we consider simple extractionssurgical extraction.

Whether your extraction is simple or surgical, the entire process will generally take about an hour. Before the procedure, you will likely only require localized anesthesia to numb the mouth and extraction site. With localized anesthesia, you should experience no pain or discomfort, although you may feel some pressure. These extractions are outpatient procedures, meaning you will be able to rest and return home on the day of the procedure.

Recovery After A Tooth Extraction

When preparing for treatment, we provide all of our patients personalized advice and instructions on how to encourage and expedite the recovery process. Luckily, there are some universal tips we can provide to all patients receiving tooth extractions.

Along with your daily oral hygiene routines, be sure to clean the extraction site. The best approach is to gently rinse with warm saltwater at least twice a day. It may also help to rinse after eating to clear away any remaining food particles or debris. Be sure you do not aggravate the extraction site by flossing or brushing over it directly. Soft foods will generally be best to eat during recovery, and this is one of the rare times our dentists will recommend eating ice cream!

Typically, you should be more or less fully recovered a few days after the tooth has been extracted.

Safe, Easy, And Fast!

It is a minimally-invasive procedure that our clinical team has performed routinely for years, and they have ample experience in ensuring that every tooth extraction causes little to no discomfort. If anything, a tooth extraction will help prevent or relieve chronic discomfort and pain for the future!

If a damaged or decayed tooth is causing you pain, we suggest having the tooth extracted to address any further discomfort. To schedule an extraction consultation or learn more about how a tooth extraction can benefit you, give us a call at 214-363-9946.
